Drywall Finishing — Level 4 & Level 5

Paint shows everything. We tape, coat and sand to the level your project calls for—most often Level 4, and Level 5 where gloss paint or critical lighting will expose every joint.

Scope

What our drywall finishing work includes

We check our work the way the owner will see it: with a work light held flat to the wall. Joints, corners and fasteners are feathered wide, sanded clean and touched up before we hand off to paint.

01

Taping & coating

Joints, inside and outside corners, and fasteners.

02

Level 4 finish

Smooth surface for flat and eggshell paint.

03

Level 5 skim coat

Full skim for gloss paint and critical lighting.

04

Light check

Surfaces checked under raking light before we call it paint-ready.

Finish levels

Drywall finish levels, explained

Based on the industry's standard finish levels (GA-214). The right level depends on paint sheen and lighting.

Level 0–2

Board only, or tape embedded with a single coat. Used where walls will be covered or hidden (above ceilings, mechanical rooms) or under tile.

Level 3

An additional coat on joints and fasteners. Typical under heavy texture.

Level 4

Three coats on joints and fasteners, sanded smooth. The standard for flat or eggshell paint in homes and most commercial spaces.

Level 5

Level 4 plus a skim coat over the entire surface. Recommended for gloss or semi-gloss paint, long corridors, and walls hit by raking light from windows or wall-wash fixtures.

FAQ

Drywall Finishing questions

What is a Level 5 drywall finish?

Level 5 is the highest drywall finish. After a Level 4 finish, a thin skim coat is applied over the entire surface to even out texture and porosity. It's recommended for gloss paints and areas with strong side lighting.

Do I need Level 4 or Level 5?

Most painted walls with flat or eggshell paint are fine at Level 4. Choose Level 5 for glossy paint, long hallways, large open walls, or where windows and wall-wash lights rake across the surface.

Do you match the finish level in the specs?

Yes. We finish to the level called for in your plans or specs, and we'll flag areas where a higher level may be worth it before work starts.
